A little lesson on creativity

Lenny here! A little lesson on creativity!! “People always tell me, Lenny”, You jumpstart my Heart! …. or, you are so motivating! I have often had people ask me” where do you get your inspiration?”

I will have to admit I draw inspiration from People, Nature, Art, and all things past, present, and future on our great rock called “The earth.”

As I spoke of in our last blog, I see things as Avant Guard, Contemporary and Consumer. “Take that which is common and make it interesting and you have created Art”

One of my favorite ways to exercise my creative eye is to purchase books of artists such as Klimt. Picasso, Gauguin etc. and look @ their combinations of color and brushstrokes. This has been invaluable to me in the Art of Hair color.

(Before I became a successful hairdresser, I would go to the library and spend hours looking @ the free VHS tutorials on fashion, makeup costume and design… and browse the books of the great artists, that I could not afford to purchase!)

I gained a lot of insight on Form and balance looking at books on drawing and portrait art. This also helped with make-up application and creating symmetry from everything to eyes to the nose, nose to the lips and lips to the chin. Books on perspective, and proportion were and are great tools for me.

Reading and watching tutorials @ the library motivated me to study Prostetique.3D makeup fabrication. I went into my garage and started creating, all the time I was learning and developing a skillset! This allowed me to become Fantasy Makeup Competition Champion for the entire state of Fl. 4 years in a row! I became a coach to others after I learned the tricks!

Upon meeting famed Makeup school owner Joe Blasco he commented on my work and said…” where did you learn to do this?” “In my garage I said!” “If you are @ this level in your garage, then come to my school and I will make you famous!” I already had my own business at the time and could not sacrifice the 10 weeks to attend the school!

Famous is just a word!!! Infamous is a legacy of being!!!:)

Architecture and architects also inspire me in the realm of form, balance and design.(Frank Lloyd Wright Antonio Goudi etc.) Designers who delve in Troump L’oreal give an eye to dimension(Michaelangelo, Rembrandt and his amazing study of Light and fabric etc.

Limitless opportunities to be inspired are now no longer just @ the libraries…They are @ your fingertips through the world wide web!!! Multiple genres simultaneously!!!

Instead of FB go to tutorials on your chosen interests and career loves!! Gain the knowledge!! “Go and find something ”Pinteresting”!!!:)

When you have saved the link or better yet do what I do write down favorite points and sketch YOUR interpretation.

In closing, CREATIVITY is not a spectator sport! You must be proactive to interpret what your mind’s eye has filtered! Write it, sketch it, break it, stretch it let it spark something deeper and you will see growth and advancement in all your creative manifestations!!!

For everyone act of pro activity, you learn 5 things! You do this because we are 5 sensory beings!!! So go ahead, eat, drink….and CREATE!!!

It’s what you were born to do!!!!!!

Hello, my name is Lenny King

Hello, my name is Lenny King, this is the first in a series of “Blog de Creatif”!

I have been a licensed Hairdresser since graduating Beauty School in 1981. I grew up in NY in the 60’s a time when Music Art, Fashion and all things Mod” came on the scene. The Age of Aquarius defined a culture and a Renaissance of creativity which flooded the Youth of the world with a Freedom of Expression!

As long as I remember, I have seen Life through an artists’ eye. My academic pursuits always placed me in the fine company of Musicians, artists, and all things creative.

Man Wearing Pirate Costume – Longwood, FL – Salon Zion

I don’t consider myself a “Blogger” however; I am using these pages as an opportunity to create a window into past, current and future Hair Fashion and social Trends, tips and techniques. Let’s begin with a template for developing such an eye.

We will be considering terms such as “Avant Guard” Contemporary, Consumer.

These words show the basis of how trends “trickle down”

First, we will review to understand the definition of “Avante Garde”. Avant meaning Task force, and guard as watchman, watchfulness, or the one I like Watcher’s eye.

Summed up in one word- “visionaries”. Most of your Top Designers take what they have filtered culturally through their minds eye and create a vision they see for tomorrows(future). John Paul Galliano (Christian Lacroix) May create an off shoulder, form fitting bodice with a long train and sewn in a futuristic metallic blue material.

In all my travels witnessing glamour and fashion events. I have almost never caught sight of such a dress. However, you will see the fashion shift occur like a ripple into the Contemporary market.

Contemporary- Au Courant, current, or living @ the same time. This is where you find the vision of JPG, trickling into a current interpretation. High quality retailers (Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom’s) etc. will showcase fashions best, and this is where it becomes “Trend”

Now you will see the interpretation through “Asymmetry, form fitted waists, low baby doll backs or fronts. Also, here you will catch the current color trend (usually you can back this up by selecting Pantone’s color prediction for the Year.

While the prices aren’t as high as the designer who created the Trend”, It is still in the economy of 20% of a fashion-conscious society. Let’s follow it through, shall we?

Consumer- Browser, enjoyer, purchaser…and my favorite
”End User”

While Fashion dictates everything to do with determining Hair, art, design, and Architecture etc. you can see through the creation of something Avant(future) becoming something Contemporary(present) and living out its life cycle as Consumer (Past-Present).

My favorite analogy is the description of “That Stuff” by Meryl Streep in the film” The Devil wears Prada. This a perfect descriptive end as she states” ….and that simple blue frock you chose from your pathetic closet, that you thought was YOUR choosing…. (paraphrased)!! Brilliant!

We find the same trickle down occurring with hair following fashion. Asymmetry follow, naturals follow, metallics- follow, form fitting- follow, A-line -follow, fabric cuts on the Bias- follow etc.

To develop your eye for what is Hot, what is Not, consider the template in which I shared earlier in this Blog Post. Avant Guard, Contemporary, Consumer.

The first model that shaved a part of her head 4 seasons ago to accent the John Paul Gautier Skin showing “peekaboo” collection, was seen as progressive…now 2 years later, high school girls are following a slew of artists, musicians, actors with their barbered or tailored locks…. now can you see how these trends get started?

The true Beauty of our industry is that it is constantly in a state of flux waiting for a new vision to emerge. Dual seasonality (Fall/Winter & Spring/summer) give designers many opportunities to manifest creatively from their “Mind’s Eye”

Choose any time period and look at the corresponding geo. neo, socio and politico undercurrents and you will develop your ability to be a TREND Spotter and creator!

Until next time choose any fashion/trade publication (Vogue, Glamour, Elle) and look for the minuet shifts in the Avant , the contemporary and you will be able to predict the Consumer by-product(end-user) have great creative Fun!!!
